Vehicle Safety / Maintenance
• Ensure vehicle wiper blades are in good condition &
washer fluid is filled.
• Verify vehicle battery is in good condition and
appropriately charged.
• Check tire pressure regularly & inspect tread condition.
• Always have at least a half a tank of gas during winter in
case you get stranded.
• Check antifreeze levels and the freeze line regularly.
Driving Safely
• Wear your seat belt!
• Turn on your lights to increase your visibility to other
motorists.
• Clear snow/ice from all windows, lights, hood, trunk,
and top of your vehicle before driving.
• Increase following distance to at least 4 seconds.
• Remember, look far ahead as you drive, so you can
recognize hazards and have plenty of time to respond.
• Adjust your driving to the road and weather
conditions.
• Don’t use cruise control.
• Don’t pass snow plows and sanding trucks.
If You Become Stranded
• Don’t panic. Stay with your vehicle for safety and warmth.
Wait for help to arrive.
• Keep an emergency supply kit in your vehicle.
• If you are in an area with cell phone service, call for help.
o Keep a charger in the car.
• Draw attention to your vehicle by using emergency flashers,
flares or tie a bright colored piece of clothing to the
antenna.
• Run your motor sparingly and be careful of exhaust fumes.
o For fresh air, slightly open a window.
• You may have to exit your vehicle occasionally to make sure
the exhaust pipe is clear of drifting snow before running the
engine.
